Meet R.L. Stine

R.L. Stine’s Life Story

ROBERT LAWRENCE STINE was born on a pig farm outside Columbus, Ohio. His first word was “oink.” His second word was also “oink.” By the age of ten, he wanted to leave the pig farm. But what would he do for slops?

Luckily, he was kidnapped by little blue aliens from the Planet of Little Blue Aliens. He was taken to their planet and forced to get down on the floor, open his mouth wide, and work as a roach motel. This is where he learned his third word—”Help!”

If you are still reading this, you probably realize that this is NOT R.L. Stine’s life story. You have wasted your time. You should have started right here….

R.L. Stine’s Real Life Story

R.L. Stine says he has a great job. “My job is to make kids laugh and give them the CREEPS!”

R.L.’s books are read all over the world. So far, he has sold over 300 million books, making him one of the best-selling children’s authors in history.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1943. His mother was a homemaker and his father was a shipping clerk. He has a younger brother and sister—Bill and Pam. No one in his family ever called him R.L. Everyone called him Bob.

When Bob was nine, he found an old typewriter up in the attic. That discovery changed his life. He carried it down to his room and started typing stories and little joke books.

His mother begged him to go outside and play. But Bob always said it was too boring outside. He stayed in his room typing away—and he has been writing ever since.

In school, Bob was not a great student. He got mostly B’s, but he never studied very hard. He spent most of his time writing stories and joke magazines. He was terrible in math, and he hated gym class. The only sport he was ever good at was ping pong!

After graduating from Ohio State University in 1965, Bob headed to New York City to become a writer. He wrote dozens of joke books and humor books for kids. And he created Bananas, a zany humor magazine which he did for ten years. In those days, he wrote under the name Jovial Bob Stine.

He married Jane Waldhorn in 1969. Jane became an editor and writer, and they worked together on several children’s books. Later, Jane and her partner formed their own publishing company, Parachute Press, and helped create all of R.L.’s most popular book series.

In 1986, R.L. Turned Scary!

He wrote his first teen horror novel, Blind Date, which became an instant best-seller. Many scary novels followed, including Beach House, Hit And Run, and The Girlfriend.

In 1989 he created the Fear Street series, the best-selling young adult book series in history. He has written about 100 Fear Street books and is adding new ones to the series this year.

Goosebumps began in 1992. The book series quickly became a hit around the world. Translated into 32 different languages, it made R.L. a worldwide publishing celebrity. The Goosebumps TV show was the number-one kids’ show in the U.S. for three years in a row.

Other R.L. Stine book creations include: Ghosts of Fear Street, Give Yourself Goosebumps, The Nightmare Room (also a TV series), and Beware!, a collection of all his favorite stories, poems, comics and illustrations.

R.L. has published two creepy short story collections: The Nightmare Hour and The Haunting Hour. Also, two teen vampire novels: Dangerous Girls and Dangerous Girls II: The Taste of Night.

If you travel to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg or Tampa, or if you go to the SeaWorld park in San Antonio or San Diego, you will be able to see R.L. Stine’s HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE. It’s a 4-D movie with amazing special effects. R.L. wrote the story for the movie, which stars Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, and Lea Thompson. Watch out—you might get VERY wet!

These days, R.L. is busier than ever. He’s working on three different book series: MOSTLY GHOSTLY, ROTTEN SCHOOL, and FEAR STREET. You can find out more inside info about these series on this Web site.

R.L. lives in New York City with his wife Jane and his dog Nadine. His son Matthew is a composer, musician, and sound designer and will be 25 in June.

Answers to the 16 FAQs

  1. Why did you decide to write scary books? Was there a certain movie or show that inspired you?
    • I always liked scary movies and books. When I was about eight or nine, I started reading scary horror comic books. They were called VAULT OF HORROR and TALES FROM THE CRYPT. My brother and I went to every scary movie. We didn’t get scared—we always LAUGHED!
  2. Where do you get your story ideas? Stuff that happens to you in real life? Your dreams/nightmares? From daydreaming?
    • Ideas come from everywhere. But most of my ideas start with a title. I try to dream up a really good book title first. Once I have a title, it leads me to a story. By the way, I’ve never gotten a story idea from a dream. I have the most boring dreams!
  3. How many books have you written in total?
    • Believe it or not, I’ve written about 300 books so far—and I keep turning them out! Right now, I’m working on three different book series—MOSTLY GHOSTLY, ROTTEN SCHOOL, and FEAR STREET. You can find info about them on other pages of my Web site.
  4. Do you ever get writer’s block and if so, what do you do to get rid of it?
    • I never get writer’s block. Mainly because I do so much work before I start to write. I do complete chapter-by-chapter outlines of every book. And I make a list of all the characters—what they look like and their personalities. That’s a big head-start and keeps me from having writers block.
  5. Have you ever seen a ghost? Do you believe in ghosts?
    • I’ve never seen a ghost—but I keep LOOKING!
  6. If you could be any character from any of your books, who would you be and why?
    • Slappy, the evil dummy from Goosebumps. He gets away with MURDER!
  7. How old were you when you knew that you wanted to be a writer?
    • I was nine years old. I started typing short stories and joke books—and I loved it! My mother begged me to go outside and play. She couldn’t get me out of my room!
  8. What are some of your favorite books and authors?
    • Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors. I always tell people that the scariest book I ever read was one of his books—Something Wicked This Way Comes. Another favorite author is William Sleator. If you enjoy my books, you’ll also like his.
  9. What kind of stuff do you find scary? Got any phobias?
    • I have one phobia—I can’t jump into water. I have to step into a swimming pool; I can’t jump or dive in. My nephews think it’s a riot that a scary guy like me is afraid to jump into a pool!
  10. Do kids come to your house for Halloween? What kind of candy do you usually give out?
    • Kids come to my apartment in New York City because I have a skeleton and a cupful of eyeballs and a lot of creepy stuff. I always give out copies of my books along with the candy bars.
  11. What’s your ideal writing environment?
    • I have a room in my apartment where I write. But I can really write anywhere I am—I’m a machine!
  12. If you could be any animal for a week, what would you be and why?
    • I’d be a seal in the Central Park Zoo. They get fed tons of fish—and they get to swim all day!
  13. When you’re writing your books, do you ever scare yourself?
    • I’ve never scared myself writing, but I hope I’ve TERRIFIED others!!
  14. Which Goosebumps book was the most fun and interesting to write?
    • My favorite Goosebumps is one called CUCKOO CLOCK OF DOOM. I think it’s a perfect funny/ scary story with a very good surprise ending. It made a good TV show, too!
  15. Got any advice for inspiring young writers?
    • Yes, write every day. Just a paragraph or two. Keep a journal or a diary. That way you’ll always be writing.
  16. If you weren’t making a living as a writer what would you like to do?
    • Beats me. All I’ve ever done is write!

Don’t Think About It!

Don’t even think about missing my new movie. It’s the first movie in my new HAUNTING HOUR DVD series from The Hatchery and Universal Home Video.

The movie is called—you guessed it!—DON’T THINK ABOUT IT!

The creepy fun starts when two kids conjure up a hideous monster, called The Evil Thing. As the legend goes, you’re perfectly safe from The Evil Thing—unless you think about it!

The problem is, once you try not to think about it, you can’t think about anything else! And of course, that’s when the thinking ends and the SCREAMING begins!

The movie stars Emily Osment, from the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana series. And the creepy Tobin Bell from the Saw movies. Watch for it on DVD this fall. And as for The Evil Thing, take my advice—Don’t Think About It!

DVD AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 4. WATCH FOR SHOWINGS OF DON’T THINK ABOUT IT! ON CARTOON NETWORK IN SEPTEMBER!

EMILY OSMENT stars as Cassie. Here she is, trying NOT to think about The Evil Thing.

A bad night for the Pizza Delivery Guy. The monster likes pepperoni!

New Goosebumps Books

To all my Goosebumps readers, I’m happy to announce that GOOSEBUMPS IS BAAAAACK!

I’m warming up my keyboard, howling at the full moon, gobbling down some Monster Blood, putting on The Haunted Mask, waking up Slappy, the Living Dummy—and getting ready to write a new series of TWELVE Goosebumps Books.

The new books will be called GOOSEBUMPS HORRORLAND. And each book will have some BIG surprises.

These two new books go on sale in March! For more HorrorLand fun, check out: http://enterhorrorland.com.

Who is The Kid Behind the Door?

You’ll find out in this creepy story I wrote especially for my online readers. Turn out the lights. Close your eyes. You don’t read this story—you listen to it.

RAINY NIGHT THEATER was produced and directed by my son Matt Stine. Matt guarantees that the actors, the music, and the frightening sound effects will give you a rainy night CHILL….

Rotten School

Bernie Bridges may be the coolest, smartest, fast-talking-est 4th grader in history. Just ask him! Bernie and his pals spend most of their time eating Nutty Nutty Bars and drinking Foamy Root Beer. (It’s so foamy, it sticks to your face for days!) Other times, they’re trying to out-scheme that spoiled rich kid, Sherman Oaks.

Also in the cast at The Rotten School are Mrs. Heinie, their teacher; Mr. I. Will Upchuck, the Headmaster; Mr. Boring, the science teacher; and Coach Manley Bunz. With pie-eating contests, water balloon fights, swim races in Poopers Pond, and the annual Wedgie Olympics, it’s no wonder Bernie and his pals are proud to be called Rotten Students!

My Rotten School books are rude, crude, and flat-out funny. And they’re jam-packed with hilarious cartoon art by Trip Park. So far, I’m planning to write 16 books—so I hope you will check them out.

ARE YOU READY FOR ROTTEN SCHOOL? CLICK ON THE COVERS ABOVE. (And remember to Have A ROTTEN Day!)

Our Australian trip

My wife Jane and I had a wonderful time during our first-ever trip to Australia last fall. We both spoke at the Brisbane Writers’ Festival. I really enjoyed meeting my Australian Rotten School and Goosebumps readers for the first time.

After the book festival, we went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. And we enjoyed food that we had definitely not tried before—barbecued kangaroo and emu! Kinda tasty….

Dangerous Girls

I’ve written a lot of vampire books. It’s fun to close my eyes and imagine evil creatures of the night, hungrily prowling for blood! And these two teen vampire novels are my favorites.

I guess it’s because the books involve two teenage girls who become vampires accidentally! Destiny and Livvy Weller go off to summer camp, and when they return, they realize to their horror that they are blood-sucking vampires!

Destiny frantically searches for a cure. But her sister Livvy likes the night life, the dark side—and she chooses to stay a vampire.

Now the family is torn apart. Destiny misses her sister desperately. What does she have to do to bring Livvy back? I think the answer to that question will surprise you.

DANGEROUS GIRLS and THE TASTE OF NIGHT are available in paperback from Harper-Collins. You can find them at bookstores and online bookstores.
